Two Final Projects Completed in Fall 2024 November 2, 2024 marked the one-year anniversary of the scaffolding coming down from around the lighthouse. Just before this one-year mark, two final projects were completed to finish off exterior restoration.
In September, Owen Ritchie completed the second top-coat of white stain on the new shingles. We are very grateful to Owen and Danny and Mary Ritchie for volunteering their time and energy to finish up this tricky job. Their efforts have saved the Association many thousands of dollars, and the lighthouse will be in great shape for many years to come. Thank you to these wonderful community volunteers!
In October our Association was once again the beneficiary of community members giving their time and expertise to help finish the restoration efforts. Rick Hall repointed the foundation stones with the help of Wayne St-Amour. Local retired stonemason Fred Maxner donated some of the materials used for the traditional lime mortar process. Thanks fellows for (literally) filling the gaps and strengthening the foundation.
The lighthouse is looking great, the exterior restoration is complete, and our volunteers made it all happen!

Volunteers & Government Officials at 2024 Volunteer Recognition
Lovely Gift from the County
PRLA Founding Board Members Honoured at Co. of Annapolis Volunteer Recognition Ceremony on September 21, 2024
These original board members: -founded the Port Royal Lighthouse Association -obtained ownership of the property from the Annapolis Heritage Society -spearheaded a successful fundraising campaign -oversaw and participated in the major restoration of the Schafner Point Lighthouse in just over three months.
The group received certificates of achievement from local and area officials, and lovely commemorative art glass mobiles from the County Council. PRLA is grateful for the recognition for this achievement, and to our supportive and generous community for the trust and encouragement received to help make this organization a success.
Since founding the organization, we’ve added two more fantastic board members, Diane Hall and Carol St.-Amour, and continue to work on restoration of the building and enhancements to the property.

Art & Schafner Point Lighthouse
Local artist and gallery owner Sally O’Grady donated to PRLA a unique piece of shell art featuring our lighthouse. This piece was originally part of the collection of beloved lighthouse neighbours Del (George) & Jo-Anna Harris who for many years lived just down the road from the lighthouse at Heron’s Cove.
Sally writes -- “Del and Joanna Harris collected an array of local Nova Scotian art from local artists that they admired. Their son James Harris inherited this collection, and upon his passing, it was time for some of these pieces to find their way back home. This painted scallop shell is donated to the [Port Royal] Lighthouse Association in recognition of the love the Harris Family had for their Nova Scotian Community.”
The Harrises were generous supporters of local nonprofit community groups, and would have no doubt been pleased to have this piece a part of the Lighthouse Association collection. Thank you Sally for this gift of local history! ere to edit.
In edible art. . . The third annual Annapolis Heritage Society Gingerbread House Competition was held at the O’Dell House Museum in Annapolis Royal from November 29 through Dec 1, 2024. The first prize ribbon went to a local group of ladies who regularly meet for coffee: Elaine Bergen, Elaine Buie, Starr Cardwell, Kristine DeCoste, Brenda Dempsey, and Pauline Lowen. Appropriately naming their team “The Lighthouse Keepers", they made a gingerbread and candy reproduction of the Schafner Point Lighthouse. Congratulations to you all for taking the prize!
2024 Lobster Roll Dinner Fundraiser Wrap-Up A big thanks to our community for tremendous support of our annual Lobster Roll Dinner fundraiser. Not only were the dinner tickets sold out, we raised an additional $400 from the Bake Sale and Chance Raffle. With the addition of the generous sponsorship by Valley Credit Union, together we raised nearly $4,000 towards operating expenses and the ongoing restoration of the Schafner Point Lighthouse. If you baked a pie or a bake sale item we thank you! To those Lighthouse Association board members and volunteers that gave many hours of work in the kitchen and setting up for and managing the event, hat's off to you!
Volunteer Robert Redden piped through rain showers and Stephen Klein dazzled with his fiddle music at the hall.
The support of our local businesses was outstanding. A BIG THANKS to:
A successful event and wonderful community effort!
May 2024 Parking Lot Enhancement & New Picnic Table Bring along a picnic and enjoy it at the lighthouse this season. Thanks to a 2023 grant from the Parker Mountain Wind Turbine Society, we have a beautiful bright red picnic table on the finished parking area for public use.
